Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of frequency and styles of parent¡¯s conflict, mediated by self-esteem, on maladjustment in children and adolescents. The theoretical model was specified and estimated. Subjects of this study consisted of 1,329(274 elementary school students, 439 middle school students, and 616 high school students) drawn from 2 elementary, 4 middle, and 5 high schools in Cheong-ju City. The pilot study was used to examine the applicability of survey instrument. The test of model was done with analysis of correlational matrix in LISREL ¥· package(Joreskog,& Sorbom, 1989), using a maximum likelihood estimation of unknown parameters. This method was particularly valuable in order to provide a comprehensive means for assessing and modifying theoretical models. As the result indicated, children¡¯s and adolescent¡¯s self-esteem was an important mediating factor in decreasing maladjustment in children and adolescent by parents¡¯ frequency of conflict and conflict styles. This finding is consistent with previous research that self-esteem is significantly associated with greater internal & external maladjustment. As predicted, maladjustment was positively and strongly affected by self-esteem and maladjustment in children and adolescents. so, this research is to generate broad-mind thinking about how parents¡¯ frequency of conflict and conflict styles, children¡¯s and adolescent¡¯s self-esteem, and maladjustment in children and adolescent are interrelated.
